The New York Times: Should Fat People Pay More for Health Care?

(via marco)

The methods proposed in this piece are pretty extreme, and no I am not in favor of a “fat tax”, but it definitely makes you think. I’m not looking forward to some magic weight loss pill mostly because we will learn absolutely nothing about how to properly care for ourselves.

Why is there so much guff when it comes to smoking while we’re one of the most overweight countries in the world?  Does the food industry hold more sway in government than big tobacco?  That’s scary.

And furthermore… the company I recently left prohibits smoking anywhere on the property and will not hire smokers… BUT half of the staff is obese, and several have developed diabetes as a result costing the company thousands in insurance claims, but they have a giant snack machine and have regular cheeseburger BBQ’s… so yeah, whatever hypocrites.

Anyone who smoked in an elementary-school hallway today would be thrown out of the building. But if you served an obesity-inducing, federally financed meal to a kindergartner, you would fit right in.
