Had the hilarious misfortune to stop here for gas (and a beer cozie with this on it) in South Dakota (or Montana.. hard to tell the diff) this summer.. Really, could not stop laughing…

I have been forced to think about the time I spend on these networking sites. Admittedly, I do spend time… TIME…. on the webz. It has actually become my job as a Communications Coordinator for the non-profit I work for. So yes, I spend a great deal of time on Facebook, Twitter, Brizzly, Tumblr, LinkedIn, and the occasional MySpace visit.
Here is my defense of time spent on the internet vs getting ‘out there’!
I live in a socially bankrupt area of WA. I didn’t grow up here, so don’t have those ‘drop on by’ friendships I used to have. I’m also 51. So, going clubbing.. even if there were such a thing in this county.. is out.
But what I HAVE been able to do, being on ‘the internet all the time’, is not only land a great job… but connect with people I haven’t seen in 30+ years that I never would have ‘run into’ at the clubs… I’ve been able to interact with friends and family on nights when my husband is working and I would be sitting here with the dog and cats.. lonely and bored.
I’m able to join causes, donate money and time.. comment and sign up for change.
I don’t spend an hour getting dressed.. drive to a club or coffee place or restaurant to spend an hour with a few people… I get comfy, listen to music and chat with 70+ people who, for whatever reason, are home too. And they are all people who mean something to me.
I’m able to spend time. Time that would otherwise be wasted… with people that I enjoy.. and would maybe never have found… and that’s the important thing.
The bonus is meeting people I would never have met otherwise.
Bear in mind that we do leave the house.. we do a lot… it’s just when some people are out at the clubs, the rest of us are home in our jammies… interacting with people they haven’t seen since Jr High.
Nothing wrong with that!
